When I was looking to get our kids bikes to get them started riding, I did a lot of research. I found that training wheels were a bad idea and that a balance bike was the way to start them off.
After a balance bike, the most important thing was weight and the ergonomics that were designed specifically for kids – not just adult components put on smaller bikes.
Several brands seemed to fit the bill:
- Woom/Woom Off-Air
- Whyte
- Cleary
- Scout
- Vitus
- Frog MTB 69
- Frog MTB 72
I ended up settling on the @WoomBikes brand and stuck with it until the kids grow into adult bikes. I started with the Woom 3 and had each model up until the Woom Off Air 6. I would have started with the balance bike but found the brand only when I began researching the best bike for a kid to learn to ride.
These bikes are pricey but worth it if you want your kids to love riding. They’re very light and not intimidating for kids just starting out. The grips and brakes are set up for success for smaller hands, and all their friends love riding these bikes when they come over as well. They are truly a quality product worth what you pay.
There’s a good resale market, so once your kids outgrow the bike, you can find someone who wants to start their kids on a great bike without spending top dollar. Used is a great way to go!
My kids learned quickly, and we were able to do family rides at a young age. We may have pushed them a little too far too early, but that’s not the bike’s fault. Now that they’re 10 and 11, we keep trying to get them excited about riding again.
Pro tips:
- Get a kickstand if the bike doesn’t come with one to protect your investment
- We live near an unpaved rail trail, so I replaced the tires with wider, more off-road friendly versions
- Fenders are a good addition if you don’t ride on pavement
- I got both gel seats and gel slip-on cushions as my kids would complain their butts hurt on longer rides
