Look Up was supposed to be the closer, and it’s the one I thought would be easiest — just list everything that’s broken. I kept thinking about how well Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire” works: it’s not really about a single moment, it just lists, and the listing itself is the punch. So that’s what I set out to do — a laundry list of everything that feels broken right now, from my seat, which I think is a lot of people’s seat too.
It was not the easiest one. Organizing it was the hard part — some things go together, some overlap, and the craziness kept growing while I was writing, to the point where I’d have to keep stopping to add the next unbelievable thing. It turned into a long song because the list is long. And the strange part is that none of it is even surprising anymore. Crazy is just normal now. I wanted to lay it out plainly so you could feel the sheer size of it.
For the sound it had to be fast — the list is long, so the tempo is frantic. I went for angry strings, violins and cello, driving the whole thing forward, sort of the same thing I was reaching for with the piano on Us vs Them: take you on a journey. Made in Suno, and like a few of these it’s not exactly what I envisioned, but it’s in the right vein.
The video for this one is Neural Frames — Claude wrote the prompts and Neural Frames handled the animation in an illustration style. It still throws weird motion artifacts that make no sense, so I trimmed the worst of them; because it’s illustration and not photoreal, I can get away with a little imperfection.
This was meant to be the last one, but honestly it feels less like an ending and more like a list of everything the other four were pointing at. I may still need to write a solutions song. We’ll see.
How I made this one (the honest breakdown)
- The idea: mine — a “We Didn’t Start the Fire”-style list of everything that feels broken right now.
- Words & lyrics: I dictate, then work them through with Claude as an editor and sounding board. Organizing the list was the real work — reject, reorder, rewrite.
- Music: Suno. I directed the feel — fast and frantic, angry strings driving it forward.
- Video: the only one made in Neural Frames — Claude wrote the prompts, Neural Frames animated it in an illustration style, and I trimmed out the worst motion artifacts.
